This piece featuring model Olivia E Wray was absolutely a color challenge. Working through the tones of peach and constantly adjusting. Everyone has their own loves and hates in color, most pigment-based artists I know have a particular color or two that just seems to get used so much faster than everyone else. And most artists, illustrators, designers of all stripes I know have a color that they just don’t like. Usually many. But something that they will just find a good reason not to work with. For me, it’s orange. I have been trying to cure myself of my aversion to orange by using it in different variations to teach myself to see the full range of what orange is capable of.
I had hoped that working on a piece with such a beautiful model would help, and it did a bit. I’m less reticent to play with orange now, but I am still deeply distrustful of it.
Collection Details:
Little Oil Paintings is an ongoing collection of handmade original art works. Each 8x10 canvas board set in a very simple white mat and black frame. My intention with this collection is to allow myself to explore and experiment artistically while still staying true to a very simple presentation. Each piece is a visual riddle. Sometimes it was a challenge in light, or color, or emotion that made me ask myself “Can I pull this off?” Every painting in this collection represents a victorious “Yes”.
